The Mandela Editorial

The Mandela is a fictional editorial created to shed light on lesser known conspiracy theories. Named after the Mandela Effect, a phenomenon where multiple people report to remember distinctly the same false memory, this publication dives into everything weird. This edition focuses on the legendary band the Beatles, and dives into everything weird surrounding them- from Charles Manson, to Paul is Dead, to someone saying Stephen King killed John Lennon. Growing up, I’ve been surrounded by this band; my family is absolutely obsessed with their music, and I myself was named after Abbey Road. This editorial was so special to put together for this reason.

For the style of the imagery, I really wanted to create something that felt unsettling and weird to fit the subject matter of conspiracy theories. I resolved this by creating duotone, multiplied imagery: layering several images over each other at a time to create something visually interesting. I also wanted to employ strong typography for this project to drive the piece, and a yellow and blue theme to pay tribute to Yellow Submarine.
